Just two weeks before the start of the 1949 Giro d'Italia, almost the entire football team of A.C. Torino died in an aircrash in Superga. The team was travelling aboard an Fiat G.212 trimotor of the Avio Linee Italiane when the plane flew into a thunderstorm while approaching Turin for a landing. Attempting to descend in low clouds and very poor visibilty (only 40 meters), the plane clipped a wing on a building and crashed in flames, killing all 31 passengers aboard.
